[Bookplate for J. W. Longley by Francis Adams Sc.] Black ink on white paper. The crest features an arm grasping a dagger. The blade of the dagger has pierced the head of a bearded man that resembles a lion head. The arm is atop a crest-wreath. The wreath sits on a flower with a round center and 5 petals. To strips extend out of the flower across the front and back of a ribbon, connecting to the top of the shield. The ribbon extends straight out with curling ends. The motto is printed on the ribbon in black, capitalized, serif font. Shield is ermine with a black bend. Bend charged with three cheetah heads. The shield features a sinister canton paly. Underneath the shield, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in large, black, sentence case, gothic font. More text is printed below the name in smaller, black, capitalized, serif font. 22. [Bookplate for James Bryce Allan] In black ink. Escutcheon parted per bend, dancetty. Bordure, azure [blue]. Above field, argent [white] and ermine, a stag, gules [red], erased, antlers, or [gold], and an annulet, or. Below field, gules, a crescent. Helm has mantling around a tilting helmet on top of which is a curved crest wreath with a dog, erased. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 23. [Bookplate for James Hatch] In black ink, an escutcheon, gules (red), charged with two lions passant guardant, with their hind legs couped. Over the lions at the fess point is an inescutcheon parted per pale, ermine (white powdered fur with black tufts) and ermines (field sable fur, powdering argent), a chevron sable (black) and argent (silver) with four lozenges ermine and ermines, between three fleur-de-lis argent, two over one. The crest is a lion cabossed on a straight wreath. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 24. [Bookplate for John Lomar] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, parted per cross. Quarters one and four are parted per pale ; on the left, or (gold), and the right, sable (black). The quarters have a bend cotised, ermine, charged with three escallops apiece. Quarter two is argent (silver), charged with a gryphon rampant. Quarter three is argent, with a cross, sable, with engrailed borders. The quarter is charged with four roundlets, two over two (cantoned). Above the escutcheon is a curved wreath, charged with a crown vallary, and a demi-lion, its arms erect, clutching an escallop. Below the escutcheon is a banner, with Latin motto within. 25. [Bookplate for John Somers by James Ross] This heraldric bookplate consists of an escutcheon, divided per quarter, with quarters one and four sable (black), with a chevron argent (silver), charged with three antlers, two over one. Quarters two and three are vert (green), with a dancette fess ermine. At the centre of the escutcheon is an inescutcheon, which is also divided quarterly and features charges of cross crosslet fitched and beasts. The escutcheon is supported by two lions rampant, each with a dancette collar. Above the escutcheon is a Baron coronet, and below the escutcheon is a banner with Latin motto within. This bookplate is similar to BP MUR ENG P S664a, which is presumably owned by the same individual after his rise to title. 26. [Bookplate for John Somers] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, divided per quarter, with quarters one and four sable (black), with a chevron argent (silver), charged with three antlers, two over one. Quarters two and three are vert (green), with a dancette fess ermine. At the centre of the escutcheon is an inescutcheon, which is also divided quarterly and features charges of cross crosslet fitched and beasts. The escutcheon is supported by two lions rampant, each with a dancette collar. Above the escutcheon is a Earl coronet, and below the escutcheon is a banner with Latin motto within. This bookplate is similar to BP MUR ENG P S664b, which is presumably owned by the same individual, but before his ascendancy to title. 27. [Bookplate for John Wingfield Larking] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, ermine, charged with three heads of wildcats, possibly lions. Above the escutcheon is a closed helmet, placed in profile, denoting the rank of an esquire or a gentleman, from which, elaborate mantling flows. Upon the helmet is a curved wreath, with a crest of a bird, wings elevated and displayed, holding a branch in its beak. 28. [Bookplate for Lansdowne] Heraldic Achievement with shield, crest (crown), supporters, and motto ; 1st and 4th Arms, Ermine, on a Bend Azure, a Magnetic Needle, pointing to the Polar Star ; 2nd and 3rd Arms, Argent, a Saltire Gules, and a Chief, Ermine ; Supporters on either side of crest, a Pegasus Ermine, bridled, crined, winged, and unguled, each with a Fleur-de-lis Azure on the shoulder. 29. [Bookplate for Rainald Knightley] In black ink, this bookplate consists of an escutcheon, quartered. The first and fourth quadrants are ermine (white powdered fur with black tufts), and the second and third quadrants are paly, or (gold) and gules (red). At the precise middle chief is an inescutcheon, argent (silver), containing a sinister hand, gules. The gules hand, known as the hand of Ulster, symbolizes the hounour of a baronet. The crest is composed of a tilted dexter helmet, a curved wreath, and a stag head, dexter and couped. The escutcheon is supported by an eagle or falcon on each side. The escutcheon and its supporters are framed by a border with flowers. The entire image, including text, is placed within a larger circular border, azure (blue). 30. [Bookplate for Schuyler Merritt] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, a barry of six, or (gold) and sable (black), with a bend, ermine (white powdered fur, black tufts). Above the escutcheon is a helmet in profile (denoting status of esquire and gentleman). Above the helmet is a curved wreath charged with a chained beast passant. Surrounding the escutcheon is a circular banner, with Latin motto within. The entire crest is situated in a rectangular frame filled with foliage-like mantling in the upper half and a row of books directly below the escutcheon. An open book, three open flowers, and a banner with "EX LIBRIS" are situated in the foreground in front of the volumes. 31. [Bookplate for T. S. Estcourt by William Haskoll] This chippendale style bookplate consists of an escutcheon, ermine (white powdered fur with black tufts), with a chief, or (gold) and indented. The chief contains 3 mullets, sable (black). The crest consists of an unidentifiable bird, erased and displayed with wings inverted, upon a curved crest wreath. The escutcheon is surrounded by elaborate floral mantling. 32. [Bookplate for Thomas Nickleson Jeffery by C. W. Torbett] The armorial bookplate features a coat of arms. The escutcheon (shield) appears to be the impalement, or combining, of two distinct coats of arms into one shield. The dexter (right) shield is quartered: the repeated pattern features naiant (swimming) dolphins in an azure chevron between three leopard faces ; roses in a divided field of ermine (white with black tincture) and erminois (gold with black tincture) ; and a pheon (barbed arrow head) over an embattled field of sable and azure. Sinister (left) is a lion passant (lion depicted facing and walking to the left), which appears to be the shield of Jeffrey’s family through marriage, the Uniackes. Above the shield is a crest featuring a tree and a leopard with a horizontal anchor under its paw. Below the shield is a motto. 33. [Bookplate for Vincent Stuckey] In black in, this bookplate consists of and escutcheon divided per pale. The dexter half is divided per bend sinister, or (gold), azure (blue) and dove-tailed, and charged with a lion, rampant and ermine with a tail queue fourché. At the dexter chief of the half is an azure canton charged with a mascle, or. The sinister half of the escutcheon is identical to the dexter, except that at it also contains a crescent at middle chief. The escutcheon is crested by a straight crest wreath and a demi-lion with tail queue fourché, ermine and charged with a mascle, azure. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 34. [Bookplate for William Craig] This bookplate consists of a gules (red) bordered escutcheon with a single bar, azure (blue), on an ermine (white powdered fur with black tufts) background. The bar is charged with three crescents. Atop the shield is a helm, and mantling which surrounds the entire shield. The helm is crested by a curved wreath and knight on horseback, with broken lance. A broken lance represents the celebration of winning a point during a jousting tournament. 35. [Bookplate for William Smith] This bookplate, in black ink, contains an escutcheon, gules (red), with a chevron, ermine (white powdered fur with black tufts), and is charged with two crescents over one garbe. Above the escutcheon is a dexter closed helmet, which is crested by a curved wreath and an eagle's head, erased, with a crown around its neck. From the helmet flows very elaborate mantling which flows out and down to the base of the escutcheon.
